A paradise in Cambodia

After a week in Battambang Daniel, Sarah and I decided to visit the southern coast of Cambodia. Although it's only about 500 km from Battambang to Sihanoukville the bus ride was extremely long. We hopped on the bus at 7:30 am, switched bus in Phnom Penh and only hopped off the bus in Sihanoukville at 8 pm. That was definitely too long. On our way back we would make a longer break in the capital. And like the people in China the Cambodians love loud entertainment on their bus journey.

When we arrived in Sihanoukville we were remembered of Vang Vieng. There are many guesthouses and many western tourists. That place was nothing for us. Daniel had enough after 30 minutes. We knew what to do. As soon as we arrived in Sihanoukville, we went straight to the booking office of Lazy Beach, a bungalow resort on Koh Rong Samloem island, and booked a bungalow.

The next day a boat took us from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong Samloem. It was a pleasant 2 hours boat tour. When we arrived, we were welcomed by the Lazy Beach staff and cold welcome drinks were waiting for us. Great first impression. We checked into one of the 13 bungalows and walked 10 meters to the private beach afterwards. From our hammocks and bungalow we had great sea view.

Koh Rong Samloem is a small island and luckily not over-developed yet. So we could enjoy relaxing and quiet island life. Lazy Beach has the best snorkeling area after Australia we have seen so far. Many fish and corals live here. The only "dangerous" animal that we encountered was the giant geckos that live in couples in the bungalows. I got bitten by one of them when I stepped out of bed and probably touched it with my foot. In the morning we were woken up by a gang of monkeys sitting on a tree just behind our bungalow. We couldn't believe that monkeys can make such noise when they have an argument.

There are no supermarkets, no shops and no other hotels next to this place. There is not even electricity, apart from the few hours in the evening when they start a generator. So we spent our days just hanging out in the hammocks, snorkeling, going for a walk in the dense jungle and eating the great food in the only restaurant there. To say it in one word: Paradise!!
